Project Description
Your challenge is to use Noongar principles:
• Zero waste – use only what you need.
• Local resources.
• Minimal footprint – enhance the environment.
To design a future house suitable for your local area. The house should accommodate 2-4 people. Consider:
• How you could grow or collect your own food without clearing or damaging natural environment.
• How your house will be supplied with electricity, water, and any other needs such as heating or cooling. Consider cost/benefit ratios of various options, such as connecting to mains grid (still uses fossil fuels, copper wiring, PVC pipes etc.), installing solar energy or batteries (use silicone and lithium), rainwater tanks (plastic, tin or concrete), or alternative methods.
• How to make your house ‘livable’ and appealing, finding the right balance between the nomadic Noongar lifestyle and our modern expectations.
Task Outline for Assessment in English
An essential part of any design process is creating a pitch to market your design and attract investment. Your team needs to work together to produce a 2-minute pitch presentation designed to compete in a competition called:
The Future of the Wheatbelt: Sustainable Housing Design for regional communities.
Your aim is to ‘win’ the competition, and a $100,000 grant to construct a model home. As such, you need to convince the judging panel that your idea is the best investment.
Your pitch can be in the form of a Canva Presentation, PowerPoint, Prezi, short film, or other multimodal style. It should contain:
• The name of your building.
• Information about the construction location and its natural landscape and resources.
• Information about the materials you will use and the design and their sustainability.
• An explanation of the key features of your design.
You should accompany each section of your presentation with eye-catching images and 3D designs.

a. Persuasive writing will require a focus on modality.
b. Language exercises, such as word clines can be used to agree upon the strength and weakness of words in the same cline or within a lexical chain. Teacher support documents on these activities can be found in resources such as the following: Clines and Continuums (nsw.gov.au)
