Learning Sequence:
1. Begin the activity in the yarning circle or on the mat. Introduce the book: this is a story about animals caring for each other. It’s written by Gladys Milroy who comes from Palyku country (Eastern Pilbara).
2. Read the story to the class.
3. Discuss what the animals did to look after each other and their country in the story.
4. From this, shift the discussion to generate a list of things we can do to look after animals and country, for example pick up our rubbish, save water, be gentle with trees and animals.
5. Explain the activity: students will now move back to their tables to create pictures of themselves caring for country by… (list single or multiple actions depending on student ability). Have students add words or sentences to describe their actions.
Extension ideas
Students may like to create their own superhero who cares for country. They could:
• draw the superhero in their costume,
• list their superpowers,
• create a short narrative, comic strip or slide show about their superhero solving a problem on country,
• share with the class.
