Learning Sequence:

Introduce texts that will prompt thinking about safe and respectful behaviour on Country:

Note: This activity can be done outside if a suitable area is available.

1. Read a story: The River encourages students to practise using their different senses to observe what’s around them.

2. Use the stories as prompts to discuss appropriate behaviours while learning on Country. For example: We need to be quiet so we can hear the animals, and so we don’t scare them. We need to be careful where we walk and stay on the paths, so we don’t disturb the animals’ homes. When we use pit-traps, we restore the holes they made, and we return everything that we collected from the bush.

3. Create a classroom display or poster about responsible learning on country. Have students generate a list of expectations, and contribute an illustration to the display, and share their contribution with the class.
